About Us

Someone jokingly proposed that an alternative slogan for Durafil could be “Expect the expected”. Funny as that is, it’s also true. We develop and publish standards for the manufacture of sewing thread yarn, and then we produce and deliver products to those standards. Being completely and utterly predictable is part and parcel of what we do.

Of course, a lot of effort goes into making this so. Only by applying specialist knowledge, experience and skills can you set the British standards for excellence and ensure consistent delivery to such exact specifications.

Durafil draw on a heritage that stretches back to the 18th century, when British spinning mills brought about the industrial revolution. Our spinning technologists and business developers have decades of personal experience in the industry, and the Durafil leadership team include staff who trained with Coats and established their factories in Asia and Europe.

Being the nominated spinner for major international thread groups, we continue to work closely with the most iconic companies in the world – Coats, A&E and A&E Gütermann as well as a range of independent European and international quality thread manufacturers.

We combine our intellectual capital with single-origin virgin fibre and precision machinery from Saurer, Savio and Trützschler. We also manufacture all thread under one roof, maintaining level temperature and humidity throughout the year. Because if you want a consistent outcome, you’ll have to exercise complete control of the production process, keeping all factors the same at all times. Anything else is experimentation, and that’s something we only do in our lab.

Speaking of which, should you like to look farther into the future, you need only contact our R&D department. With Durafil already having set standards for water-soluble and heat-disappearing tacking thread, we are currently developing laser-resistant thread for the next generation of sustainable distress denim.
